01 | X159 Dux

The Hamble XOD Early Bird series finally got underway on Saturday when Dux and Kathleen went out to play.
It was perfect XOD weather, the sun shone and there was a light breeze that piped up as the afternoon progressed.
WEDNESDAY 31 MARCH
Series: Wednesday EB
No Starters
Sadly this cold wet spring has played havoc with painting and varnishing and most owners are desperately trying to catch up to get their boats launched.
Only Dux was ready for the first race of the season on Wed 31st March although Kathleen has now joined her on the pontoon so hopefully they should get a race on Sat 11th.
Dolphin and Mischief hope to launch in the next couple of weeks.
WEDNESDAY 14 APRIL

Despite the forecast of no wind, there was a pleasant 2/3 and a beautiful sunny afternoon.
Dolphin launched and arrived at the start line still attaching various crucial pieces of equipment. Due to the light airs and spring tide a short race was set.

A light north easterly made for a lovely evening sail.
Tom Rogers was out with yet another female (new not seen before). He will deserve a special prize at the laying up supper for the most female friendly co-owner in the division!

SATURDAY 01 MAY
Series: Saturday A + Jo Hall Trophy
01 | X13 Mischief
02 | X124 Kathleen
03 | X150 Pepper
04 | X36 Dolphin
With the help of Elliot, we managed to launch Mischief in time to race although we were nearly stymied by the wind which died as we tried to get out of the river.
However once in the Solent the wind piped up and the rain stopped although there were a lot of glowering clouds.
Mischief's crew was trying to sort out the demented spiders web of string in the bottom of the boat and was unaware we had started, however Mischief showed a clean pair of heels and managed to lead the fleet home.
As Moveable Ballast remarked it can only go down hill from here! Dolphin had her usual bevy of beautiful blonds on board (that does not include the helm!!)
WEDNESDAY 05 MAY
Series: Wednesday A
01 | X13 Mischief
02 | X124 Kathleen
03 | X82 Magic Dragon
04 | X150 Pepper
A dark dismal afternoon (tac tic to keep switching off) with a light north easterly wind and an ebbing tide.
Four X boats came out to play (Magic Dragon joining us for the first time this season).
As so often happens, for the first two thirds of the race we had adequate wind but by the penultimate mark the wind died and with a strong ebbing tide we stood no chance of getting home.
However whilst we were making way it was very noticeable that Magic Dragon was going like a train downwind although not so good on the wind and Kathleen, who had a bad start, crept up the fleet and as the wind got lighter and lighter she went better and better and very nearly overtook Mischief.
It was decided that we would have a result from our positions at the time that the Committee boat pulled the plug. We did not get ashore until after dark
SATURDAY 08 MAY
Series: Saturday A + Jo Hall Trophy
01 | X36 Dolphin
02 | X159 Dux
03 | X150 Pepper
Another miserably cold grey day with showers and force 3 north easterly wind.
Only 4 boats came out which was disappointing. Movable Ballast had been promoted to helm and then had a senior moment when he forgot what the time was and so Mischief arrived to late to do a proper start! Come back Richard all is forgiven.
However Dolphin got away well and showed us all a clean pair of heels whilst Pepper and Dux fought it out for second place even to the extent of having a luffing match to the penultimate mark.
WEDNESDAY 12 MAY
Series: Wednesday A
01 | X13 Mischief
02 | X124 Kathleen
03 | X150 Pepper
04 | X82 Magic Dragon
What a bizarre race full of incident. Mischief went aground beating out of the river and then had an an unfortunate bump with Pepper, Kathleen's traveller came off the track when she was in the lead and Magic Dragon had a first time crew on board who survived and even said they would love to come again!
We beat out of the river with a south westerly and had to beat back up the river with a north easterly! The wind proceeded to move through 180 degrees during the race so that at one point we had a run down to a mark and as we tried to make the rounding the wind changed (Mischief was in irons at this stage!) and we had to hoist spinnakers again for a run back from whence we came!
On another occasion Pepper was hard on the wind but a few hundred yards away Mischief and Kathleen had spinnakers up! It was a complete lottery not improved by some bitter rain showers - I don't know why we do it to our selves.
SATURDAY 15 MAY
Series: Saturday A + Jo Hall Trophy
01 | X13 Mischief
02 | X36 Dolphin
03 | X159 Dux
04 | X150 Pepper
05 | X124 Kathleen
06 | X84 Lodestar
A more clement afternoon and 6 boats out including newly refurbished Lodestar and a very happy Martin who has managed to fit 32 jammers into her systems!
They were still sorting out the string as they set off and the wind died as they tried to get out of the river so were late to the start.
John Butt had very kindly organised Eddie Mayes to be race officer so we had a proper start and a pleasant force 2/3 wind - perfect.
Dolphin was in fine form and is really starting to fly now, all Tom and Julie's winter faring has really paid off. Kathleen was short of crew so borrowed one of Tom's bevy of beautiful blonde's, Cheryl, who enjoyed herself and would like to join us regularly.
Seven boats came out to play in a nice southeasterly 3-4.
The first beat was inshore to avoid the tide but with it only being 2 hours after low water it was quite shallow.
Mischief touched bottom a few times! It was close racing with Nanette and Magic Dragon (she judged the lay line spot on) dicing for the lead around the first mark, but then Nanette took the lead on the run.
On the final run to the finish Nanette, Magic Dragon and Mischief battled it out. Magic Dragon had a kite problem and was overtaken by Mischief who then slowly closed on Nanette and managed to pip her at the post.

A most beautiful day, a lovely south easterly breeze, sparkling green water, and warm sun - it makes up for all those excruciating hours spent in freezing cold barns or under tents, putting the 'makeup' back on our old ladies.
Once again the tide was the key to this race, those that stood out on the first beat had the advantage and on the final run Pepper sailed a blinder by going out into the stronger tide and made up hundreds of yards to beat Kathleen to the line.
Nanette (previously Lodestar - Keith has given her back her original name which is much prettier) showed us all a clean pair of heels and led the fleet home. There was an exciting finish between Dux, Magic Dragon and Mischief with little to call between them.
Finally a lovely warm evening with a light to moderate southwesterly.
Mischief continued her accident prone season by hitting the windward mark and having to do turns!!
As always when racing in the Solent it is all about tides and so it proved particularly on the final leg home to Hamble Point.
Lodestar and Magic Dragon went inshore to beat the tide whilst Kathleen, Pepper and Mischief went straight for the mark. Kathleen who had led for most of the race, was just pipped at the post.

Wind stopped play - as it was gusting 27 knots!
A lovely warm evening with a light south westerly breeze around 2 knots. 6 boats came out. Mischief continued her affinity with circles by touching a mark. However Magic Dragon sailed a great race and judged the tide and shifts spot on to be the deserving winner.
Pepper very nearly caught Nanette, but having to bear away out of the path of a small tanker put paid to her chances.

JO HALL TROPHY WINNER
X36 Dolphin | Tom Rogers (Helm)
The Jo Hall Trophy was competed for over three Saturdays:
24th April, 1st May and 8th May.
The first race of the Richard Donald Series was held on Friday 4th June on a lovely evening, with a clear blue sky, warm sun and a light breeze of force 2.
Sadly the turnout was poor, only the 3 Golden Oldies were out, Mischief, Pepper and Nanette. However it was a lovely sail although we could not catch Nanette.

Another lovely afternoon with a 10 knot breeze and a flooding tide. Tim Harding kindly volunteered to be race officer so we had a committee boat start.
Dolphin had a scorching start and it was close racing until she went out too early to find the tide and lost a lot of ground.
Mischief and Nanette went later but it was a horrible jumbly sea and Nanette tacked back to find more comfortable waves and in addition more wind which gave them an unassailable lead - we could just about read her sail number but usually only when she passed us on the next leg of the race.
It is rumoured that Keith went home and started his BBQ before returning to greet us coming in!
It was great to see Xavia, despite a technical hitch just after the start which lost her alot of ground, coming back into contention and Sartu out for her first race of the season. Sadly Kathleen had a very late start which put them out of contention.
Very light wind again so beating the tide was a priority which meant mud-larking along the Lee on Solent shore with the result that despite the extensive use of the 'echo sounder' several boats went aground including Dolphin and Mischief.
Martin was seen to take a ducking in his efforts to keep Nanette from touching bottom! As the wind died the course had to be shortened.

FRIDAY 11 JUNE
Series: Richard Donald (2)

With a contingent of three Hamble X-boats turning out for the Westmacott Regatta, in Portsmouth Harbour, it was a welcome first race of the year for X96 Fantasy to make it up to the 5 boats racing from Hamble.
A tricky northerly breeze kept twisting and turning all afternoon, providing opportunities to pick up or slide down 2 or 3 places in a matter of a minute. All boats admitted afterwards it was more dependent on luck than good judgement. Pockets of breeze appeared to lift and drop on to the water with no predictability – the one saving grace was the lack of ‘Solent chop’!
Tide was also a large factor with a split in the fleet from Cutter to East Knoll (which amazingly bore no fruit for either side) and an interesting tide quandary from Hill Head back to Cutter – when to tack into it and fight up to the mark?
Overall, Nannette had etched out a bit of a lead but by the time the end of the race was called at Deck (Rule 4!), all boats had been bunched up by a runaway ebb tide. The only way home was on the end of kind tows from one of the many passing Hamble bound yachts as XODs bobbed backwards past Reach.

Due to the forecast of light winds and an strong ebb tide as well as a"carpet of wall to wall" yachts making thier way to Cowes for the round the island race, this Richard Donald series race was postponed.
The first Friday in July will be added to the series.
FRIDAY 18 JUNE

RACE ABANDONED
Another lovely afternoon with a brisk wind but a strong ebbing tide.
A slight error of course by Nanette allowed Mischief to take the lead at the third mark however Mischief managed to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory, when her crew made a complete 'horlicks' of a spinnaker hoist on the way to the finish and allowed Nanette to sail through!
Calypso was a creditable 4th helmed by Frits in his first race of the season. His boat Onward is looking very smart and due to be launched very soon.

A little more wind, gusting 16 knots at times, than we have been used to but it was great to have a proper Committee boat start provided by Elliot and Jo.
The fleet divided with Nanette and Mischief fighting for first place with some very close racing which was very interesting and exciting. A little way behind, Calypso helmed by Frits, Dolphin and Pepper battled it out for 3rd place, again in some very close racing.
Getting home up the river proved interesting as all the Round the Island boats came steaming into the river and we had to tack our way in and out of the melley.

Every dog has his day and Mischief finally managed to beat Nanette, she had a cracking start and managed to hold on to her lead without committing some foul up!
The good weather continued with a brisk south westerly force 3 - although there were some big shifts. There was close racing through out the fleet.
It was great to see Phil out crewing for Tom. He says Southwind will be in Hamble within the week. (Note from the Editor / Co-owner: “She’s on her mooring!”.)

09 | X118 Xavi
Another glorious evening with a nice south westerly breeze and no water over the combings, crew could get very used to these benign conditions!
It was good to have John Butt back from holiday and sailing It. Once again Mischief was the bridesmaid rather than the bride as Nanette led the way home.
FRIDAY 25 JUNE

02 | X13 Mischief
03 | X10 It

Ten boats turned out and by the courtesy of Frits Janssen we had a committee boat start.
Once again Dolphin had a corking start as did La Mouette helmed by Frits. Several of us failed to notice that we did not have to go to the first mark and could go directly to Royal Thames which caused some consternation amongst those boats who eventually realised their mistake!
Mischief, Nanette and Dolphin were very close to each other at Royal Thames but then Nanette went close inshore out of the tide and over took Mischief who stood further out.
Calypso had a great run and caught both Mischief and Dolphin however there was a fidial disagreement on the next fine reach and she fell back with an icy silence on board!

Another lovely warm afternoon with a good brisk breeze - one could get very used to these conditions.
However there were a few minor hiccups, the first when X10 It went aground on the way out of the river with an ebb tide.
Fortunately she was able to get off although Simon Mills who was crewing, had to go overboard and push!
The second was that the majority of us had not realised it was a persuit race and therefore the start was very hit and miss! However it was a great evening sail once we had everything sorted out and the XOD's had their own race within the Persuit Race.

Rocking and Rolling.
At long last the majority of the fleet was out racing although some found the attractions of Bembridge more attractive!
The first serious wind of the season 4 gusting 5 (24 knots). Mischief made a strategic error by not going straight across the channel after the windward mark (Stormforce) to get into the contra tide down to Royal Thames. This allowed Nanette to take the lead which Mischief could not claw back.
There was a hairy run down to Royal Southern when we did rock and roll (front man not keen on this point of sail and tends to mutter alot!!).
It was great to see Leading Wind and Southwind. Satu is also showing the fleet a clean pair of heels as is It.

An overcast evening with a nice force 3 breeze and flooding tide. This race was part of the Combined Clubs Regatta as well as being part of the B series.
Having gone on opposite tacks to the windward mark, Nanette just had the advantage of Mischief at the mark with Sartu and Magic Dragon close behind.
On the run and a shy reach down to HW Corp, Mischief slowly nibbled away at Nanette's lead but on the rounding of the final mark Mischief had to shoot the mark and lost ground which allowed Nanette to lead the way home.
Onward who was looking very smart had her first outing of the season and Harding of Twyford had Vanity out to prepare her for her owners appearance at the weekend.

Another perfect X boat sailing day, sunny, warm with a force 3 breeze and 12 boats on the start line - pity there was no committee boat!
Dolphin helmed by Nick Brebner led the way to Royal Thames with It and Nanette close on his heels.
It was good to see Peter Baines helming Vanity who after some adjustment to her mast position quietly made her way up the fleet Jamie Wilkinson (our Wed evening race officer) helmed La Mouette very effectively - I hope we have made another convert to X boats.
Moveable Ballast (helming Mischief) started the day well by shouting anglo saxon invective at a couple of sting pots who did not know the rules of the road! and then decided he knew better than crew on how to set the jib - result very slow! Come back Richard all is forgiven.

However, various X boats and their owners were to be found at the Royal Southern, scrubbing and getting their boats up to scratch for the ‘Central Solents’ and the ‘Classic Cowes’ Regatta.

For the first time in 99 years, XODs were seen racing off Hythe in Southampton Water.
Heads turned on the decks of the Red Funnel ferry as 17 XODs from Yarmouth, Cowes, Hamble and Itchenor sailed from a start line on the Netley shore and raced to the northernmost Hythe buoy near Hythe jetty.
The third race of the XOD Central Solent Championships had a course to commemorate the first XOD race held in June 1911 by the Motor Yacht Club that had its headquarters aboard the old ex-Admiralty paddle steamer “Enchantress” moored off Netley.
Individual race results and the full report continues on RSYC page.

Four Hamble boats entered into Classic Cowes left only a handful of boats racing on a lovely Wednesday night's X-boating.
'Lovely' in that there was a good consistent breeze all evening and the tide was still just rising as we were approaching our moorings.
This made us some of the first in the HRSC for a feed and a pint after a very pleasant sail.

The last Saturday race before the majority of X-boats head over to Cowes provided a good blow to test breaking strains and iron out any wrinkles before measuring ourselves against 87 other competitors.
None truer than on Dolphin where the spinnaker pole downhaul snapped early in the first run followed by very wrinkled brows after a very poor tide decision by the helm on the next windward leg!
The race course took us out as far as Flying Fish, a mark we don't see that much of during the year but which may well be in use next week. More good Cowes Week practice.
'Rule 4' was applied one mark before course 81 was due, finishing us all at Cutter. We returned back to the mouth of the river to watch the real treat of a Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster Bomber flying overhead. Spectacular!
